I've been using a Linux-based VPS from Slicehost.com for all my client "preview" sites as well as a couple of personal and blog sites for the past couple of years. They have been extremely reliable that entire time. A few months ago they were purchased by Rackspace which has given them more capital to work with but they have remained a separate company.

As Rob said though, if you're new to Linux server admin (which I was when I started with Slicehost), the learning curve is probably steeper than if you go with a VPS from HostMySite or other "full-service" hosting firm.

I'm not an employee and don't have any other relation to them other than being a super satisfied customer.

Adam, I have a ColdFusion/Windows VPS account with HostMySite. I host all my ColdFusion and .NET applications on that server and have had great results. All of my blogs are using Wordpress on a Linux server hosted with FuseNetwork. I have had good success with them as well.

Rob also brings up a good point about the learning curve of a VPS (the same thing goes for dedicated servers as well). You do need to understand how to set up sites, handle DNS and things of that nature to truely benefit from one of these solutions.

I have recently made the switch to VPS. I am using Gearworx with their $70/month CF8 plan. There has been some level of learning curve for me in terms of learning to use this Plesk system, and a lot of time spent learning how to create my own name server, but it's up and running for me and as I port over more of my sites the process should be a lot quicker.

The documentation is minimal, but their support team has been fantastic so far, stepping me through the areas I needed help with, and even offering to check over my DNS configuration before I flipped the switch.

I am very happy being on a VPS. Little things like being able to use ColdFire and fixing cfform.js so that validation of select boxes actually works without having to have alternate versions of that floating around (come on Adobe, fix it finally!). I love having the freedom to tailor things to my own personal standards.

Great post! I am currently dealing with a few of the 5 dollar hosts myself and really want to move over to a VPS, just haven't found the one right for what I need and what I can pay. If you don't mind telling, who are you hosted with now?
